What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the study and treatment of misaligned teeth or malocclusion (improper bite). The treatment uses different corrective appliances such as braces, plates, functional appliances etc to bring the jaw into the proper alignment. We offer orthodontic treatments to both children and adults.
Common orthodontic problems:
- Tooth crowding: is a result of a mismatch between jaw size and teeth size. Problems that may arise are the space between each tooth will be too narrow for proper cleaning and will cause plaque/tartar retention in the area. Aesthetically, crowded teeth give an irregular and overcrowded appearance and can be somewhat unattractive.
- Under-bite: is caused when the lower jaw is more protruded than the upper jaw. An under-bite can cause jaw joint problems and it can wear down the front teeth severely. Conventional orthodontic appliances such as bracers, reverse pull head-gear and elastic bands can be used to correct most under-bites.
- Open-bite: happens when there is a gap between upper front teeth and lower front teeth during biting (as opposed to the upper and lower teeth coming together). This gap can result in speech and eating difficulties. Fortunately, this can be corrected and the gap between the teeth can be closed by orthodontic braces.
- Impacted tooth: happens when there is a gap between upper front teeth and lower front teeth during biting (as opposed to the upper and lower teeth coming together). This gap can result in speech and eating difficulties. Fortunately, this can be corrected and the gap between the teeth can be closed by orthodontic braces.
What are my options for orthodontic treatment?
The main orthodontic treatment options are:

- Discomfort may be experienced during the start of the treatment until the patients get used to the appliances
- Cleaning can be difficult during treatment
Orthodontics for children and teenagers:
In majority of the cases, orthodontic treatment can start during early teenage age when the last baby-tooth has been shed. But in some cases, the treatment should commence just before the last baby-tooth shed off. Many orthodontic problems become apparent after seven years of age, however, regular dental check-up for your children will be vital to detect an orthodontic problem earlier. An early detection and treatment will prevent problems from developing and enable treatment at a later stage shorter and less complicated.
Orthodontics for adults:
